General Random Thoughts: Biohazard/Resident Evil edition

I really can't be bothered talking about RE stuff much any more, quite frankly. Whatever Capcom has planned, we can't stop them even if we wanted to.

It's just like, meh. Whatever. And when it comes to random respondents on gaming forums...

We have our opinions. They have theirs.

I swear, I get so irritated by this suggestion to remake RE again, or the prequel, 0. Even a CV or RE5 remake would be vastly shitty as well, mainly due to Capcom's track record of omitting content, and making the control system feel more janky than a one-legged man in an arse kicking contest.

I am really tired of all the retreads RE has been going through. I don't know why modern fans are content with the same recycled stories in the same eras instead of pushing the story forward. Knowing that for the next decade we are going to get mostly reimaginings is not interesting or innovative. RE:2 felt special when it first came out, but the flaws of that game became apparent the more I played. The narrative from RE6 to RE7 is also jarring and does not feel natural. Unlike RE3 to RE4 where there is a plethora of side games to fill in that gigantic gap. Focusing on Ethan over a roster of legacy characters was a mistake. I find it hilarious that they killed him off after a measly 2 games. It really puts RE9 in a weird spot narratively, especially with a 17 year time skip.

Also, all this talk about "grounded" gameplay makes no sense to me and I don't know why some people keep touting it when we are talking about a franchise that has superpowers and unrealistic mutations. I assume they are referring to RE6 because you can do acrobatic moves which they don't like. As much as I disliked RE:3, the dodge mechanic added more depth to the gameplay from RE:2 which was a walking simulator in comparison. I also grew to dislike RE:4 movement over time because of how clunky it is compared to other games. The knife parry really is not innovative and feels annoying when broken knifes spam your inventory for 20 hours.

So really I am suffering a dissociative relation with RE lately and it's hard to stay excited knowing what is to come.

I found this review of RE8 to be very funny.

He mentions how Ethan has no reflection, and how the original 1996 game is way better. Because by God. It is.

I agree about Chris, too. He's a classic character who just feels so out of place in RE7 and 8. A real iconic guy in the series who has overcome many a major boss. Now he feels like an old man, reduced to kidnapping babies, and he doesn't even look like Roger Craig Smith.

Also, I chuckled at the, "Ethan's bottle of piss" line.

I'll always prefer the old RE games. Always.

Yeah. The graphics may be so darn old now, but shucks. Who cares? :D

I think it's a pity Capcom has left it in the hands of fans to remaster the games, unofficially. I think if the new crowd played the original RE3, they will certainly agree it blows the trashy 2020 demake right outta the water, and actually yields the right kind of chase scenes and tension. Or Raccoon City gets blown out of the water with it, considering it got blown up in the end by the government. :p

Sneaky, indeed. But the documents are already out there.

Of course, after receiving the awful news from my sister today regarding our mother's fragile state, I need to prioritise my mum over RE discussions, as she doesn't have long left at all. :(

Nonetheless, I certainly gave the knobs online a run for their money over the years, as I am sure my mother will agree. It was some battle, though. But now my torch has to be passed to someone else.

I particularly enjoyed those classic Michael Does Life streams where he acted kind of silly, but it was a good laugh to roast the naysayers. So all's well as ends well in that regard. ;)

The more promotion I see for RE Engine games at game shows and events the more it irks me. It’s like Capcom is hellbent on erasing the legacy of older RE games like they never existed. They rather shoehorn us budget multiplayer games for anniversaries than give us HD remasters. I always dreamed of the original RE1-3 getting trophy support but I doubt that will ever happen, especially after seeing RE1 released on the classics catalogue on PS5 with no trophy support.

After RE:2, the games that came after I played significantly less. Going through RE:4 five to six times felt more like a huge grind for most of it. They really took the criticism from RE:3 to heart and added as much padding and nonsensical side quests as they possibly could.

They got it completely backwards how I would have personally wanted to see these reimaginings play out. RE:3 should have been the faithful one while RE:4 should have been way different from the original and taken inspirations from 3.5.

I feel your grief. It's why I started looking for other horror games to play, and movies. RE for me isn't even really that interesting any longer. The only downside is, other games just aren't on the level of RE.

As I so often say, a big reason as to why they depleted the horror side of things was because they kept using the same macho characters, for too many sequels. Sure, they are iconic, and we love them. But there's no sense of dread anymore.

You know Capcom doesn't have the balls to kill off any of the main heroes either. So now thanks to this idea of viruses slowing down their aging ability, we'll just be getting corny team-up missions. Then you know they're gonna just come out on top each time.

For a long time, Capcom has just disappointed me. The fact that many people online today are so accepting of these fairytale games with a tall vampire hooker, and half-baked remakes with half the OG stuff entirely gone, shows they couldn't care less, and will happily accept anything.
