RE:4 Impressions Thread

It's still more faithful to og game than both re2-3r. I'm glad it is but at the same time, ı still think that it should have been an actual new game, even a rerev title for example. Re4 didnt need a re engine treatment to me and from what ı enjoy with the game's steam port due to revamped controls, ı still think it didnt.
I agree with you. I am tired of all these remakes. And when another team remakes a game they always tend to stick close to the original.

I am very disappointed with side quests. Leon a government agent is hunting rats and shooting blue medallions in every area. Killing rats is not fun. Only 3 side quests were good where killed powerful enemies. Other quests were just shooting targets. No side quests had any story.

Shooting is absolutely not fun. In order to make it more realistic they have ruined shooting and reloading animations which doesn't looks good but are closer to real guns reloading.

Exploration is very fun. Lot of areas specially village is great.
What do you think about the other files? Many of them seem to be dedicated to expanding los iluminados, it looks much more expanded here compared to og game. I didnt read them fully yet but ı remember checking some from game footage and all ı remember is luis being an umbrella researcher and working in the same branch that developed ne-alpha parasite. I suppose this is another indication of connecting both parasites.

Just finished my 3rd playthrough. I took my time on the 1st playthrough and soaked it all in, and after unlocking Professional difficulty I really enjoyed not having autosaves in playthroughs 2 and 3, it made the experience feel more authentic. I managed to unlock the Chicago Typewriter and have been having some fun with that too.

So what do I think about it? Fantastic! Not quite as nostalgic for me as the RE2 remake but definitely a great remake and holds its own as a modern game too. Exploration was good and I enjoyed being able to back track and find every item and treasure that I may have missed. I also got really into the shooting range mini game and was really happy to discover in new game plus all the games stay unlocked from the first playthrough. Eventually you can win a charm that reduces the cost of the infinite rocket launcher by 400 000 pesetas, so that gave me a reason to play the shooting range again in NG+. Then I had some fun with the infinite rocket launcher!

One thing I noticed at the end it feels like it is setting up the story with Wesker in RE5, which made me think that RE5 will be getting a remake next. Not sure how I feel about that as my favourite RE title Code Veronica would benefit far more from a remake.

Overall I give it 9 / 10
For reference I gave RE2 remake 10 / 10
and RE3 remake 8 / 10

Took my sweet time with it and couldn't be more impressed overall. RE4 is very much a product of its time, it equates to a lot of the charm the game has. It's also a very weird title atmospherically and I had trepidations they could bring it in line with the more grounded focus of todays titles, especially while retaining the games identity.
I completely agree with this sentiment about the original RE4, it doesn't need to be changed. It has its own charm. I say it's "horror" but its own horror. I actually liked the juxtaposition between the arcade-y feel, and the horror charm spliced in.

I thought it was impressive all around. I would really like Code Veronica remake but a lot of the assets in this game can be used for RE5. That seems like the next move. Only solace there is we'll have an interesting new co-op game and another round of Mercenaries.

Well put, glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I actually didn't know about that charm and grinded the 2M pesetas, rip lol. It really did capture much of the original replayability wise. Outside of the game itself, which I've detailed earlier, I truly do enjoy the addition of NG+ and being able to swap difficulty each run. Even more so, the ability to store guns and not have to sell or re-buy them every run. It allows for so many more self created stipulation runs, as well as infinite being tied to an item instead of just the guns. I've logged seven or eight playthroughs at this point and the game is just bottomless fun, I haven't really ran through an RE that many times (RE:3 doesn't count being so short) since actual RE4, so that says it all.

Like you and @LogBomb I'd love a CV remake, if not for the simple fact that the game being rendered lost so much detail over time. Where the pre-rendered games are far more dated, they've also aged like fine wine due to the immense amount of detail in the bg's. CV ironically being more groundbreaking at its time set it back quite a bit over time, it truly deserves the treatment. Those areas would have so much more character and detail in the RE Engine, not to mention there are actually quite a bit of varied locales. I'd ultimately prefer RE:1 over everything, but CV is right there.

I seen a lot of people saying that making you move and shoot now removes the tension. No, it does not really.

To be honest, I couldn't imagine playing any other recent game where you place your shots just by standing still. That's so 2005.

I also welcome the knife breaks. It's something that presents a challenge. Because we don't need any of these "get out of jail for free" cards in this era. :p

I find 0 to be too elongated. It has a great first hour or so. The train part. It's so claustrophobic. But once you end up in the facility, it drags for a while.

Ok never mind Del Lago just took some practice. The first Krauser fight however where you’re forced to use the knife was pretty brutal on Pro. I was trying to do a no heal run but Krauser was too difficult to defeat with only 1-2 hits left. It honestly felt like I was playing Sekiro again which was not a good feeling.

Yeah the Krauser knife fight was hard on Professional difficulty. It forced me to fully upgrade my knife. Same with the mine carts on pro, It was actually a challenge.

Late into the day first impressions... I'm just up to the Ashley escort stuff.
It could be my imagination but the shooting etc feels better than the demo. It could also be that it has been some time since I played it, and also since I played RE4 OG. The world feels more natural in its design despite many things being the same. It highlights my problems with REVIII in which Ethan is sluggish and not suited to action. Anyway. It is actually good so far. But I want to just put down some nitpicks here.
Not having Ashley be able to wait any more is not great.
Not having the ammo upgrade fill your weapon sucks.
Not having the laser sight default to all weapons sucks.
Grenades are weak.
Having no QTEs but keeping some 'dodge' moments is odd, and keeping the Gigante fight identical is odd too.
The lack of 'Umbrella stock collapsed' in the prologue is really weird. I feel like Capcom is embarrassed to have any connecting lore between each game in these remakes. This goes for RE2 and RE3 too. Do new players even know the STARS mansion plot? Or what Mr X was even sent out to do? But why is Luis now an Umbrella researcher? They are muddying the water by dropping old ideas but adding new random ones for no reason.

I really hope this remake craze ends soon. We could have been up to RE11 or w/e by now if their writing team focused on an actual roadmap for a more connected storyline. There are so many loose ends and unanswered questions yet but they keep adding more backstory to things no one really asked for.

Agreed. I new game starring Jill and Chris in the gameplay style of these remakes should have been done by now.

I remember hearing about a Nintendo Switch game with Rebecca Chambers, that was supposedly the third Revelations installment under a new name. It sounded awesome. But they just had to go and cancel it.

Yes. When will the remakes end already?

I think this is the most odd part of the remakes. RE:2 comes out and everyone loves it more or less, it's universally praised. The engine is tight, the balance between modernizing a classic formula is perfected and the decade old argument of classic vs action is finally put to rest. Biohazard finally found a formula that everyone agrees is Biohazard and loves. So how many new entries have we had that uses this formula? None.

Well, that occurred with the original games too. Certain sequels got unfairly panned, while others were praised to the moon and back.

Now in this era, they're doing the same things again. Like saying RE3 has cut content, when all of the recent remakes went through similar changes as well. So it's essentially a case of these fans just nitpicking.

Capcom is know for re-releasing everything in their catalogue for a profit, and that has never changed. Remaking old titles is just the latest phase, after they got tired of semi-remakes and spin-offs set in the old game timeline. RE3 has iconic locations and unique features missing so why wouldn't people complain.

Anyway here's an on topic nitpick:
Ashley running away like an idiot instead of being captured in that metal trap is dumb.
That being said the castle itself has new elements that are satisfying. I'm just in the bug sewer thing now.
