Just finished my 3rd playthrough. I took my time on the 1st playthrough and soaked it all in, and after unlocking Professional difficulty I really enjoyed not having autosaves in playthroughs 2 and 3, it made the experience feel more authentic. I managed to unlock the Chicago Typewriter and have been having some fun with that too.
So what do I think about it? Fantastic! Not quite as nostalgic for me as the RE2 remake but definitely a great remake and holds its own as a modern game too. Exploration was good and I enjoyed being able to back track and find every item and treasure that I may have missed. I also got really into the shooting range mini game and was really happy to discover in new game plus all the games stay unlocked from the first playthrough. Eventually you can win a charm that reduces the cost of the infinite rocket launcher by 400 000 pesetas, so that gave me a reason to play the shooting range again in NG+. Then I had some fun with the infinite rocket launcher!
One thing I noticed at the end it feels like it is setting up the story with Wesker in RE5, which made me think that RE5 will be getting a remake next. Not sure how I feel about that as my favourite RE title Code Veronica would benefit far more from a remake.
Overall I give it 9 / 10
For reference I gave RE2 remake 10 / 10
and RE3 remake 8 / 10
Well put, glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I actually didn't know about that charm and grinded the 2M pesetas, rip lol. It really did capture much of the original replayability wise. Outside of the game itself, which I've detailed earlier, I truly do enjoy the addition of NG+ and being able to swap difficulty each run. Even more so, the ability to store guns and not have to sell or re-buy them every run. It allows for so many more self created stipulation runs, as well as infinite being tied to an item instead of just the guns. I've logged seven or eight playthroughs at this point and the game is just bottomless fun, I haven't really ran through an RE that many times (RE:3 doesn't count being so short) since actual RE4, so that says it all.
I thought it was impressive all around. I would really like Code Veronica remake but a lot of the assets in this game can be used for RE5. That seems like the next move. Only solace there is we'll have an interesting new co-op game and another round of Mercenaries.
Like you and
@LogBomb I'd love a CV remake, if not for the simple fact that the game being rendered lost so much detail over time. Where the pre-rendered games are far more dated, they've also aged like fine wine due to the immense amount of detail in the bg's. CV ironically being more groundbreaking at its time set it back quite a bit over time, it truly deserves the treatment. Those areas would have so much more character and detail in the RE Engine, not to mention there are actually quite a bit of varied locales. I'd ultimately prefer RE:1 over everything, but CV is right there.
