If that's where the chainsaw man was on guard, it was likely done on purpose, so that intruders cannot get across so easily. Otherwise, there isn't really any explanation I may think of offhand, other than it being an old bridge that had fallen apart.

It was after saving ashley from the church. I wanted to get 3 gold tokens so ı had to travel back to the area where the shooting range was but ı found out about the bridge being broken for the 1st time. In og game, this was done at the start where you couldnt travel through that anyways but in re:4, they do that in a different spot where you cant go back to a previous area. Just one of the many decisions in re:4 for a worse purpose.
