RECV The Prospect of a CODE: Veronica remake?

I'd say it's real enough and has been for quite some time that we should have some fun theorizing around these parts.

While it feels like the generation of remakes in the industry at large, especially in our series, there are some games that simply deserve it more than others and I always felt CV was that game (outside of RE:1 unless A.I. upscaling gets to a point it can natively fix the lost background assets by Capcom). CODE: Veronica's biggest flex also became its biggest weakness as it aged: rendered backgrounds.

At the time it was unheard of for the series outside of Dino Crisis, but especially doing it at 128-bit this was something totally new. Add in panning cameras and such and we were truly seeing the next generation before our eyes. The problem was it lacked all of those finite details that we came to adore about the pre-rendered crowded city street in the original PS1 trilogy. While time went on, sure the resolution lacked, but those backgrounds were incredibly detailed thanks to "cheating" the system with pre-rendered. CV started to look more and more flat with less environmental detail as the generation went on and games like Outbreak using Capcom's OB Engine started to figure it out. A lot of the atmosphere is imagination now in CV. Through lighting, music and art it still conveys fantastic themes, but it lacks the finer details of other games in the series both before and after it. It's a wild card of sorts, an odd one out. If a game in the series could ever benefit from a facelift it's Code: Veronica and this is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited to see it happen.

Recently NateTheHate leaked that Code Veronica is deep in development, this on top of Dusk Golem claiming that it was the next remake a while back. So various sites have been reporting that it is happening based on these leaks.

It's interesting because at the end of RE4 Separate Ways, the cut scene of Wesker on the boat seems to be preparing the story for the RE5 remake, including playing the music "Wesker's Theme" from RE5 during the scene. Then when you consider that they have been remaking the numbered games exactly in order, I would have bet money that RE5 was the next remake ... but Dusk and now Nate have both said that is not the case and Code Veronica is next.

In my opinion it is probably the game that will benefit the most from a remake.

Those aren't journalists from around the world lol. Yes, the RE5 remake is more likely after that RE4 tease (after after Sheva's VA teasing something). But I've yet to see any real news beyond the usual suspects, who will basically say anything but keep it all so vague. No news sites I read have reported this. Yes these remakes will eventually happen because Capcom is on the trend and locked in. But that doesn't lend any authenticity to "leaks for inside source". Saying things like "open world motorcycle for Claire" and other stuff just comes off as pure guesswork.

Of course if they're building the "Wesker and Chris" story up CV should be done before RE5. It will need some working out since many new players won't play the RE1 remake with tank controls and get the backstory. OG Wesker and the whole the mansion incident (of which all references in the RE2-3 remakes were deleted) will be difficult to come back to. They've kinda screwed it up.

I think the point that I was trying to make is that it is a bold call by Dusk and Nate that Code Veronica is the next remake, as it really seemed like RE5 was coming next. Perhaps they know something, time will tell.

At this stage anything is possible. I'm still wondering what the post credits scene from the RE3 remake to become something, it was almost intentionally pointless. People want it to be a new Jill game (or something with Rebecca in a green shirt) but it could be original skinny Chris before he heads into the CV storyline.

The reason people have been reporting on it is because of the recent leak by Nate and originally by Dusk, not that they are the journalists. Just google Code Veronica Remake and you'll see a bunch of news sites reporting on it. It's still just a leak of course.

Yes I see the search results from about 4 hours ago, seems like nothing conclusive and the source being a "prominent leaker" is pretty funny. At least the recent RE Zero remake speculation was based on someone's resume. All of these games are the ones I see as weaker entries that have aged poorly, hopefully they are brought in line with current standards. I can do without all the item systems and partner systems in Zero, CV and RE5.

Again, I think we should have some fun theorizing more so than wondering if it's happening.

I think the prospect of addition and change also lends itself to my excitement, more so than just the facelift. It was one of the more cumbersome games as far as soft-lock's for first timers, it can definitely use some balancing. Also the idea of opening up the island some is exciting. Not open world or anything, but foe-open (RE:4 boat segment going around the village).

Always thought that 2, 3, and 4 seemed like easy money when it came down to remaking a game.
They already had that 'it' factor, there’s nothing to lose. I don’t believe CV has that same gravity, and from what I have seen it didn’t even get a pc port…?

That being said, when they turn the opening shootout sequence into a 15 minute un-skippable cutscene just sit back and enjoy the fireworks 😛.

That was also one of the more impressive FMV’s at the time. I remember showing my uncles and such that as a kid and they were floored. Dreamcast truly was ahead of its time, love that little Naomi board.

It's a good scene and another example of how the devs loved James Cameron back in those days, with Umbrella becoming the Cyberdyne lab.

Just to be clearer

Dusk wasn't the first to talk about it, that was Andi from Screenfire Germany, he only took the credit for it.

VGC made an article about it and it was then backed up by Nate. Cvxfreak also RTwetted that article.

I'd say it's definitely happening because of how loud the talk is, that usually never goes the other way around.

I think it desperately needs it. I've replayed it a few times over the past 10 years or so and each time has been a chore. It's definitely my least favorite to play through of all the mainline games which is a shame because I think the soundtrack is one of the best in the series. I'm just hoping they don't ruin aspects of the story. Darkside kinda did with the changes they made to Alfred and Alexia's relationship. It was way more creepy with the incestuous tones in the original. Steve also needs to be made to be way less annoying. I get what they're going for with him but I don't feel anything towards him in both renditions of him so far. With how likable Capcom made Carlos however, I have faith they'll improve him.

Even with RE5 being hinted at at the end of Separate Ways, Code Veronica should get the remake treatment first to build up Wesker and Chris's story. Seeing a lot more of Wesker in Separate Ways was such a treat and I would LOVE to see more of him in a Code Veronica remake. I'm curious how they would improve certain enemies. The albinoid for example is one of the most forgettable enemies in the series, I'm curious if it would even come back.

I think it is happening just due to how much fan outcry there has been for it. They're running out of older RE games to remake anyway.

I mean... it's always been a chore. Coming off RE3 which was dynamic and added a bunch of stuff to make an action climax for the PS1 series... Claire was sluggish, the 3D environments were bland, and the soft locks were abysmal. The Ashford family history stuff was good but I wonder how much backstory will be chopped, though of course a new version will play better and the boring prison will now look amazing.

They better keep Alfred’s dolphin laugh in a remake or I riot! :p I never liked Darkside’s changes and it ruined Alfred and Alexia’s relationship that made it so creepy and weird in the first place. It’s the only game where you can potentially softlock and having item boxes somehow be linked together when they are over 1,800 miles away is absurd. They should keep Claire and Chris’ inventory separate from one another entirely to remedy this design flaw in a remake.

Honestly the Darkside Chronicles voice changes didn't work for me, like somehow even Steve sounded worse. Maybe if they can keep the original voice or similar for Alfred but get someone actually sounds young for Steve instead of a dumb impression of a teenager it would work? It's hard to imagine lol.

Rumours still suggest RE5 remake is next.
It might just be an Xbox Series X/S version of the game rather than a remake, as it's currently only playable via backwards compatibility.
That being said I would be all for a remake of RE5, particularly after the ending of Separate Ways where it seemed to be setting up for RE5.
