Images have surfaced up of an early RE9 build which was open world and multiplayer. Interesting stuff!! Not even sure how to feel??

My lord, this has me feeling so many emotions. I for one did not want this for RE9, however with that said, I absolutely am foaming at the mouth for exactly this with another OB or any form of Network Biohazard.

I wrote an article about this in the past and it's making me revisit these thoughts, in fact I'm sad that we're still at square one all this time later: https://biohaze.com/brainstorm/

It honestly looks more like a prototype for a potential RE5 remake so perhaps if they DO remake RE5* they could take inspiration from these scrapped ideas and apply it there instead.

*I personally do not think it's possible to Remake RE5 due to its neocolonialist undertones, but there is room to expand on that type of gameplay for future titles with a modern engine.

Yeah I tend to agree with you @Duty in that it had the typical RE5/6 co-op feel, not a full fledged cooperative network title like Outbreak, which is what we need from a new side series.

I'm convinced the director was trolling when he said an online/open-world RE game isn't what fans want.

He appears to be smirking when he says that.

I'm more than confident that another title is being developed to follow up RE9, with that same vision. Another Outbreak, probably.

They wouldn't be showing that footage - and connecting RE9 directly to the Outbreak titles - for no reason.

I mean what else is he going to say? "Fans would probably love an open world online Resident Evil game like Elden Ring but survival horror but we don't have the sufficient staffing or experience to develop such a game in a timely manner"?

Get real! I'm honestly amazed they're being as humble as they are. That's not to say it's not lazy wording but still by PR standards they are being rather modest!

Ok.

The cries are definitely louder than ever after having Alyssa in the game, I think even they underestimated the interest. Now to show us that is even crazier. I never thought we necessarily needed another OB, meaning the story and characters, but we did need an OB-like formula for the RE world. They could easily add new scenarios, stories and characters to it as time goes on. It’s quite literally the perfect live service model, a rare time the format could be beneficial. I just pray they aren’t confusing people not wanting a mainline entry to be co-op with wanting an Online Biohazard title, his wording was quite vague.

I'm very grateful they chose not to go in this direction but I do find it fascinating that they even showed footage of it.

That said, while we may not want that kind of open world multiplayer RE, they must have heard the outcry for an Outbreak remaster/remake. I mean for fucks sake, Alyssa is one hell of a character to choose to make the next mainline game around. They could have easily chosen someone more relevant and still kept the setting the same.

I find it even more interesting that the seeds were planted all the way back in RE7!

If they don't remake Outbreak or do the logical thing (Mercenaries Online) then I could care less. So much time and budget has been wasted on online modes nobody wants, it's good they scrapped another one before it got far.
