OT OT Game Discussion

Basically you need a really modern GPU to run UE5 games well. My advice would be to invest in a GPU right now, a really good one that can run UE5 games very well and should not have to upgrade for a long time.

From what I've heard from other people it has lots of flashy features but is never properly optimized. Though issues with MGS could be a modern Konami problem since they suck. The "Master Collection" was also riddled with problems.

As time goes on, developers will learn to optimize UE5 games better and within a few years it will go from being a hot mess to a stable, mature and well optimized engine.

Never a good idea to make a final judgment of something right out of the box. Though first impressions are important to.

Doubtful since it's not that new. Also they have no incentive now we're in the golden age of "rush out a buggy mess and patch it later" for many publishers beyond this one. That's just the way things have become, Konami couldn't even be bothered to release a good PS1 emulation.

Bingo. No good GPU is saving you from bad optimization. Sure it’ll help push through, but for what you pay you won’t be getting the performance you should be. 7800x3d, 64gb ddr5, 4090 gpu here… I’m still underwhelmed by a lot of UE5 ports.

I am completely marking tf out rn, this is one of my favorite games of all time and I have been begging for this for decades now.

This games gameplay loop is so much fun and the perfect fit for current FPS standards on KBM or roller. It was stuck behind clunky Nintendo gimmicks for too long and never should have been. It’s going to shine and blow up imo. This is massive for the series, we may get a proper sequel after all.

Some PZ2 gameplay. The animations look next level AAA. This game was truly a top ten of all time for me, I can’t believe how good this looks still.

Playing through Silent Hill F! I...have mixed feelings about this game. In terms of atmosphere and overall tone, it hits all the beats that a Silent Hill game SHOULD hit. It's got tension and really has me on the edge of my seat, however I've found the "action" aspect to be pretty repetitive and draining. At first I was praising it, because it felt like the game had its own identity, but it's too heavy reminiscent of a Souslike. I know there's been a defense in saying "We're not a Souslike because other games do this too" but trust me when I say that if you're playing the game, you'll notice spot on the driving inspiration for these gameplay mechanics is 10/10 Soulslike.

Soulslike is a genre within a genre (action RPG), but I've played plenty of action RPGs that don't require a stamina bar for actions. Ironically enough, as I say that, a stamina bar tied to actions DOES add a layer to the tension for the game, but the more you progress the more out of place it begins to come off.

Haven't beaten it yet, but I'm overall liking it so far (the story is interesting and the atmosphere keeps me going), but I can see why there's been discourse on it from fans saying it's "Not Silent Hill" especially if they came off playing the Silent Hill 2 Remake.

It looks nice but I don't see anything that says it's a Silent Hill game, i.e. the birth of ancient gods plot. I feel like SH2 dream logic "wooooh it's all your own psyche" stuff has taken over from anything resembling a storyline for many years now.

It had my attention when they said it would be more action oriented but from what I’ve seen there isn’t any actual depth to fighting. Its like Callisto Protocol, but in an asian setting.

Watching the fandom fight over whether or not the game is a ‘legitimate’ title reminds of re6—specifically the reactions. Except this time I think the story and setting so far has led to more positive reactions than negative ones even if the game isn’t actually true to the previous titles.

omg I swear I randomly thought of this on my commute home yesterday and to see someone else co-sign indirectly gives me the validation that I ain’t crazy lol. Callisto Protocol was that same “janky fun” but what kept me going was genuine interest in the story and that’s the same sentiment I have for Silent Hill f. It’s just swing swing, dodge dodge (the stamina gauge does annoy me at times because I get too dodge happy and then I’m just stuck). There’s really isn’t any depth outside of using charms to create a “build” and even that along with the health/stamina/sanity stat increases just seem out of place for a “Silent Hill” game.

I just rolled the credits last night and honestly, I’m very invested in the story now to the point where I’ll do the extra playthroughs to get the endings to piece together the implications of the first ending.

That makes sense. Gameplay looks sour but the story kinda has me interested. Probably going to boot up some cutscene only gameplay to get a better insight into the characters.

I saw that there’s a mod that lets you duel with lightsabers if you complete the game in a certain way, so that should at least shake off the monotone nature of the combat if you’re interested in that.

Picked up the Project Zero 2 Collectors Edition from Japan.

Beyond excited for this game, just wish it didn't drop so close to RE9. I think they missed a good window for sales around Halloween, though it won't damper my enjoyment and hype.

I've also been playing a ton of Arc Raiders lately. Those of you that know me here know I was head over heels for TLOU Faction II so when that got cancelled it gutted me. Arc Raiders picks up a LOT of that DNA and brings it to life in a very unique gameplay loop and package. The quality of the game is surreal.

After The Finals and Arc Raiders, Embark really became my new Bungie. If anyone wants to try it feel free to reach out I'll run it with anyone. Even has some areas that are very Outbreak.

Embark Studios really knows how to get great performance out of Unreal Engine

Oh wait, I thought UE5 was broken forever and could not be improved upon or mastered. That's what Mocata and Yama said.

Huh? I'd love to see the quote on this because I have said just the opposite. I have said multiple times that too many developers do not correctly optimize their games in UE5 and still release them. I have continuously pointed to titles like The Finals and Arc Raiders as the exception, thus holding much bigger studios with more funds accountable for these terribly optimized releases on the engine. Criticizing bigger studios for not optimizing their games =/= criticizing the engine itself. It does seem a bit unnecessarily heavy, though that isn't an excuse. Ironically if you watch the development videos on Arc Raiders, the game achieves such great performance because it literally strips down tons of UE5 features and rids of them in favor of performance and proprietary plugins. Again, not sure what you were on about, but you're off on both accounts.

Actually what I said was UE5 is the gaming engine equivalent of steaming effluent and deserves to burn in silicone hell, and so does ARC Raiders a game I never heard of until just now.

Arc Raiders is a really good case study for how UE5 has really gone in the wrong direction in terms of what game developers need. The game is essentially set up like a UE4 project, even using a global illumination system by Nvidia that was developed for UE4 (RTXGI). It doesn't use any of the buzz word features of UE5 like Lumen, Nanite, Virtual Shadow maps or MegaLights, and it doesn't use Nvidia's current global illumination system for UE5 (ReSTIR GI) either, and yet it has the best performance of any recent Unreal title. I'm really hoping that Epic and Nvidia take notice (Tim Sweeney posted about Arc Raiders on X) and focus more on performance. It used to be that a new feature was worthless unless it was efficient and had excellent performance.
