A Game Boy Color port of the original PlayStation Resident Evil was
announced around the same time as the Nintendo 64 version of Resident Evil
0, with new enemies and save features to be included. This was the start
of the Resident Evil and Nintendo partnership, sadly the first two
attempts including Zero on the Nintendo 64 failed. HotGen Studios, the
developer of the port, was able to capture the original game's
three-dimensional game play on the Game Boy Color. It certainly looked
impressive for a handheld at the time, but the backgrounds had an
irritating solarized look to them, this due to the compression methods
needed to allow such images on the Game Boy Color. The game was eventually
cancelled as both HotGen and Capcom felt that the game was of too poor
quality to produce. A "replacement" title, Resident Evil Gaiden, was
developed with the Game Boy Color's limits in mind. Most would have taken
the solarized backgrounds over the experience that Gaiden gave, however. |
