IGN recently had an interview with Resident Evil 6's Producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. He talks about the development of the game and their attempts to bring various different types of horror together rather than focusing on just one. He also confirms that the game will feature both Action and Survival based sections as well that the Co-Op portions of the game are going to try something new.

Lastly, he also hints that Leon & Chris may not be the only returning characters from the series and that "There are a lot of characters still to be announced." in the coming months.

Well I'm certainly looking forward to the news so please do provide. Just, please capcom, don't go over board. Give us one more new trailer, more details about the gameplay, and tap a little into story. Don't overdo it like you did previously please. lol

They said the same thing about Revelations, too, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.
