Valkyria Chronicles was excellent, a joy to play. Resonance of Fate was garbage, so was White Knight Chronicles.

Opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one.

That goes for all of us by the way, so don't take it to heart. There's just no use talking over what one feels is good or bad, it's all preference really. Overall Resonance of Fate got great reviews, so you're definitely in the corner on that one. White Knight not so much, but sometimes I like games as such. Not everything has to be sparkling high budget for me to enjoy.

With that said, I'd like to see what you think of Reach when done, especially since you completed ODST prior.

The last game I beat was Mass Effect 2, for the third time. And that could pretty much be the review itself!

I remember a time in the game industry where it felt like games were losing replay value. Hell, some games today are still like that. But ME2 has so many branches to it, you can't help but beat it at least twice just to see what else you can do differently. And that's important to the genre of RPGs I believe.

I love the FF series because it feels like I'm watching an epic story unfold however I don't have many real choices to make. Just a single role to play in a predetermined fashioned along with predetermined friendships/lovers/enemies. But Bioware RPGs, like ME, offer more freedom in the dialogue department which is a large part of RPG games. Some things can't change of course, like you'll always save the day when you beat the game, sure. But you can choose your lover, you may not be able to save beloved friends from death on the battlefield, you can be a darker hero if you wish. You are truly playing a role. And to think I avoided the ME series because of it's popularity but I find it's status is well deserved.

Ys Chronicles I & II

When you think of RPGs that have the Japanese flavor you no doubt think of two things. SquareEnix(Squaresoft to the nostalgics) & Final Fantasy. However before Square was known as the RPG king out of Japan a small company invented the the japanese styled rpg. That company is named Falcom. They have a few RPG IP's and started developing on the PC88. One game in pacticular seemed to gain a small cult success that would later become thier crown franchise. Ys. (eace) It has been ported to many systems like Famicom,Master System and others however when it got a fan base installed on the west it was on the TurboGrafx16 CD or PC Engine CD /Turbo Duo. That really got the ball in motion.

Let's skip to the year 2010. Xseed (seen to many as the new working designs) has been kind enough to bring this series and to a masterful job at re working the 2001 PC complete.

Story

Well this is really two games but with a continuing story. You start as a very adventurous young hero named Adol Christian. He arrives at Minea, in the land of Esteria. When he recovers from being found after getting shipwrecked He is called upon by Sara, a fortune teller, who asks for his help to rid the land of rising evil in the land.

He is asked to seek out 6 books that contain the history of the lost land of Ys and obtain the power to rid of evil. During this quest we find out who the two goddesses where and how the land became what it is and begin his quest to solve the mystery of Ys and rid it of evil as well and return it to peace.

Little does he know he about to have his first of many shipwrecks.

Gameplay

If you played Zelda series(wait what kind of sheltered fool hasn't?) at first this should be fairly familiar. Silent hero and top down view. Where it departs is it's very unusual combat system, known as the bump system. It's pretty much what it sounds like. You don't swing a sword in traditional fashion while you do equip sword and shield you just run into enemies but careful you must hit on certain angles otherwise you can take damage.

Like any RPG you gain experience points and level up get gold upgrade equipment. The combat really shines in a boss battle as you have to use careful strategy and a different one on each boss. These are so well done I have seen few done so well you actually want the fight to last longer because it's so damn fun! You will however have a fetch quest or two and an escort mission. Fret not thankfully these do not feel tedious as in most games that do this. Everything just flows so well and unlike Zelda no handholding.

Image
These are totally radical fight s dude!

Music

Many may know Yuzo Koshiro from composing the music on games such as Streets of Rage and Revenge of Shinobi and yes Shenmue as well. His first job was working for Falcom. He made a great start on his career as it's still one of the best OST in gaming. Great thing on PSP version is that you can choose from 3 different versions of the music. Original PC88,complete or Chronicles. I could post every song from the game but here are just a couple examples.(chronicles) of the great music such as The caves or how about The overworld theme. And lastly one tough fight

My last thoughts

If you like action and RPGs old school gameplay and great music then what are you waiting for.
Worried it's story is a bit to simple? Worry not it's crafted very well through the game and also have to remember the story is from 1987. Bump system while takes getting used to it becomes second nature after a while and works quite well.

So if you are into Zelda or any old school retro RPG's and action. Get it. It's the best version of the game yet.

I stand by Skies of Arcadia as one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

Excellent reviews there, man. Keep it up. If I were you, I'd tone down the blue and all that centered text though.

Edit: Also, speaking of Star Ocean - Dear god, what have they done to that series? I loved the first two SO games, and then the third one came along and turned the entire in-game universe into the Matrix. Words fail, they simply fail. You can see where my cynicism comes from now at least.

I know what you mean! The first two games were godlike, but the third and onward? So boring to play.

I miss my Leon. ACID RAIN~

Also skies of arcadia was good but it suffered from too many random battles. I know that sounds weird but I've never played an RPG before where I literally had to fight something every 2 steps. So annoying, give me at least seven steps to enjoy the scenery please.

That game has no battles compared to early SMT titles, haha.

I'm one of the few people on this planet who 1K'd Star Ocean IV, actually enjoyed the game for the ultimately flawed experience it was. Complete garbage in comparison to the first two though, I agree.

Klonoa

Todays most popular games rely mostly on HD FPS or playing with grandma waving little white sticks in the air and downloading updates, demos,DLC and more.

Let me briefly take you to 1997 when platformers were still very popular as Sony was trying with Crash Bandicoot & Spyro to compete with Sega and Nintendo's famous faces as was everyone else with some cutesy character or something trying to have an edgey 90's attitude. Yes some were great and many were terrible.

However one came along unlike the rest even though by looking at it it seemed like another "HEY ME TOO" game.
It was Klonoa:Door to Phantomile and it was great and didn't take off to be a big franchise as hoped it still gathered enough following to have a few game run on a few platforms.
Then the series went quiet for a few years.

Until 2009 when Namco made an attempt to reboot the series with a total remake of the original on the Wii.

Oh hai der tee hee, lets be friends k!

Story
First screen we see is a moon and the falling ring with the text reading
"Don't you think it's kind of strange? How sometimes when you wake up, you know you had a dream but you can't remember it? Where do you suppose those dreams go? But there's one dream I remember very clearly, as if it was happening right now."

The game starts off to this dream to introduce us to Klonoa and his little Pal and a wedding ring that would fit on Rosie O Donnels chub mitts sausage fingers as your weapon/tool you will use through the game.
Then of course soon after we see the parade of colourful feilds and wonderful goodness and smiles something bad happens. Then he wakes up to find what he had dreamed really happened.
At first it sounds simple enough, bad guys, kidnapped princess ok lets go save her but it broadens a bit eventually.

I won't go into much detail because yes this game while no not super complex but does get the player to be emotional at times even cry a little at parts esp the emotional ending which fits more of an RPG than a platformer.

But dreams are a key in this.

Gameplay

Now we are very familiar with 2.5D games but originally the game on PSone was a fairly new concept since in that era everything was trying to be a Mario 64 clone. Klonoa decided lets use 3D visuals but not open world but still not quite sidescroller so you do go through caves and wrap around environments with 3D thinking but 2D gameplay it's really well put together and they kept that in the remake and remains just as refreshing as ever. The level design is wonderful mostly.

You don't stomp on enemies to kill them, you use your ring to snatch ones near bye and toss them at others,or you may need them as leverage to jump off their backs to get to a higher platform or get items or even toss them away from the screen with your back turned to get something else. At times it's like a mini puzzle esp in boss battles it's really quite unique and fun.

Though like any game of this genre you will have to find keys and ways to get to new areas by solving a puzzle or two and the game gets a bit harder as you go along as it should but the learning curve is well enough that it sticks with you and not tossing cheap crap at you then back to easy or back to hard. It's fairly seamless, though a couple times I was stuck for moment scratching my head but not for too long.
Best part is it supports Classic controller and Gamecube pad. Thankfully Namco didn't try and force any motion junk. They just did KISS( Keep it Simple Stupid)

Visuals

I am sure in 1997 this game for PSone looked decent and of course colourful so naturally for Wii they had to give it new paint.
However in this era Wii games are a gen behind tech wise and no HD support so how does it look in todays world?
Before I get to how it holds out to modern gaming lets first look at some comparison from original to remake.
http://imgur.com/G3Uza.jpg
http://imgur.com/GgWLF.jpg

http://imgur.com/BDkCu.jpg
http://imgur.com/L2l81.jpg

So yes obviously quite a jump from what screenshots show.
But how does it look in motion? Awesome. The animation is well done and one of the few Wii games I pop in and just say WOW everytime, they are sharp incredibly colourful,so much so even Mario feels challenged. Everything just pops out at you and what I also love is the little details like when you progress each stage you can see in the background in the distance where you started and the enemies still pacing back there. Little light effects and great water effects. Everything is just so well crafted that you may just think of this as a pretty game period and not just a "pretty game for Wii".

Closing comments.

Mario and Sonic will no doubt be more popular than anyone else and this sadly didn't sell to well but to me I got more joy out of this than anything those other two put out the last several years.
This game me the same great joy and charm plus more that I have not had since the 16 bit era. It's a re make that is done right and maybe up there among the best where you rather play the remake than the original.
The music is perfect for this game,to the little Phantomile language of gibberish is great.
This game gives me nostalgia even though before this I never played the series,it's just that good.
You want a great platformer and not on a retro system or download anything, get this play it love it.

If you end up not emotional or not likeing this game then you must be as souless as a ginger freak.
