The part where you use the Helmet Key to open a new door in the estate is like backtracking. But in general, a lot of horror games have a bit of that in them. Well, not so much the new ones like RE4, cos you usually get a key by killing a sub-boss like the chainsaw Majini. But yeah, you'll certainly notice it more in older games like Silent Hill 2 where James needs to hop from apartment to apartment cos Laura kicked the key out of your reach. RE2 also has some backtracking, but you get used to it eventually.

Backtracking is necessary when you acquire the key to unlock a room or an area you couldn't get to earlier. Once you get the Helmet key and you have to go back to the mansion, you at first think it would be no problem since you've already killed all the zombies that would stand in your way. However, something even more terrible awaits you once you step back into those eerie corridors. In REmake, you have to backtrack back to the main mansion not once but twice. Once you open the gates below the stairway, the lower you descend, the more you think that you are on the stairway to hell. Those were very scary thoughts.

Yeah, plus what about the Hunters? Everybody has to fear those. Remember that swipe attack they could do that killed you in one go? Even on full health that move could signal the end. The backtracking parts of RE1 were the best parts of the game. It added mystery too.
