It’s been almost a year since my view of Resident Evil 4 has changed. When RE4 was first release for the PS2 (I didn’t have a GameCube) I got it and played it for the first time and after my first play through my opinion was that I hated it and it was the worst Resident Evil ever. So, some time passed and my friends and I would periodically get into discussions why I didn’t like the game I kept telling them it just wasn’t Resident Evil to me. I didn’t care what people said or what reviews said to me it was crap. Then a few months passed then I got to thinking maybe I was too harsh on the game so I popped it into my PS2 and started a second play through and after I finished it my view on the game had not changed. I still thought it was crap and also I was becoming very angry with pretty much everybody who liked it. It was coming to a point whenever anybody said that RE4 was good I would automatically think less of them. After some time I gave the game another chance and started a brand-new game and finished it but my view of the game didn’t change I still thought it was crap. I was getting to the point where I was thinking maybe I’ll never like this game. Then one of my friends and I were talking and he would just piss me off so much because He would say RE4 is a awesome game and I was an idiot for not liking it. So, for the fourth time I popped it into my PS2 thinking about all those other times I played it and was disappointed and I told myself I won’t happen again because if it did I would never touch the game again so after I finished the game and the credits were rolling all I could say was “Damn, that was one hell of a game”. I was always too stuck-up to realize how great of a game this really was. All my friends were shocked that my opinion changed and so was I it took me four times until I found the game to be awesome. So, now a game that I hated so much for such a long time is now a game that I actually enjoy. So I just want to tell my experience with Resident Evil 4 what’s yours?

The single greatest game of all time in every respect. Pretty much perfect. BOOM.

I never hated RE4 - in fact, I've always thought the gameplay was the most addictive and most replayable of the series. I loved the free aim, the creepy locales, and grid inventory system; managing the attache case was a puzzle in itself! However, while I've always thought RE4 was a great game, I never thought it was a great Resident Evil game. That may sound ridiculous to some, but that's how I feel. I never thought the story fit in the RE universe; it felt as if it was a different universe with some of the same characters.

RE4 came out around the same time as Outbreak File #2, and I remember pouring far more time into the latter. I'd hear from friends and various other people that I was "lame" for liking Outbreak better than RE4. Of course, I had grown up with RE - I still remember the excitement of getting RE2 on N64. For many of these people, RE4 was their first RE game (or at least the first they had liked). They didn't understand the appeal of the "crappy" camera angles of previous games, something that, to me, gave Outbreak its charm.

But back to RE4. After time, I appreciated the B-movie quality script, which I guess was what Mikami was going for. "Your right hand comes off?!" It was a game to enjoy, and not to necessarily take seriously (unlike some of the past titles in the series). The game grew on me over time - especially the gameplay and the locations (the village was so creepy, even in the day). Now I actually feel nostalgic when I think about the game. Of course, this was after I played the abomination that was RE5.

I agree with you about re4 not fitting the resi atmosphere... hell I got my first play back in 2007... mainly because I prefered outbreak (which I bought over resi 4... ya dig ) re4 was more of a franchise reboot to me... sure I liked the ideas and whatnot but it still sucked overall... but I still like the updated merc mode (hated it on re3) and the weapons... but going with leon was a stupid idea... I would have went with barry and rebecca if it was my choice

I thought it was hilarious how you could now kill a boss with a RL in like one-hit. Seriously, that was ace. It was also cool how Leon seemed to be promoted from zombie killer to village killer in almost the span of 5 solitary minutes! Now that's why Chris will never be Leon.
