Has anyone here ever played Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? The one based off the film? I think it's the best movie game I've ever played. I haven't tried Goldeneye yet but this is a fantastic game that holds up (for me at least) even now. I do a replay of it every year or so, I love the level design in this game, it's compacted full of hidden areas and secrets. So fun to explore. And it had a fully explorable city, well, two towns that you can run around and rampage and do whatever you wanted in 3D gameplay, two years before GTA3 came out. Sure there were no cars, but you could actually kill kids in this, IN A STAR WARS GAME! The guards would chase you around and send Bounty Hunters after you if you murdered people. It also has some cool role playing elements to it. It's like a platform/RPG/action-adventure/mini-sandbox game.

Oh man, so many memories of this game. I remember it being really difficult and somewhat glitchy, but I loved it. I would always attack Boss Nass and get murdered in about 2 seconds.
One of my favorite things to do was go on a killing spree in Mos Eisley. There was so much you could do there! Those kids, "Who ya gonna murder next mister?", and stepping in that guy's dung worms..

Yes, i played Star Wars Episode 3, i got up to the Utapau lvl right before Order 66 is activated. But I stopped playing it out of boredom. The game overall was better to me than Episode 1, and there was spliscreen 1 on 1 jedi duels where you could pit Obiwan against Dooku and i remember there were some other wierd names... i cant remember
Still, it was awesome, but I would advise buying Star Wars Battelront2 instead of this.

About Episode 1, i would have to say it would be Theed, because if I remember you could go into a tank?
I'm not sure, I may boot up Episode 1 into my ps2 to see if the glitch is still there. Oh, yeah wasn't there also a music video on Episode 1 of the movie? God, i loved that.

PS2 games are pretty cheap now I'll pick pick up Revenge of the Sith if I see it. Doesn't sound to bad. I love Battlefront 2, the PC version is the best, but I have the PS2 version as well. One of the best games of all time.

Yes I loved going on killing spree's lol. The game had some much stuff to do in it, and things to find too. I remember this Twi-lek chick came up to me and told me she wanted to see me later privately, so I followed her into her house, and there she was giving this guy a kinky private bath with her twin sister! And if you talk to her she screams at you to get out or she wont get paid. And they thought GTA had adult themes. The dialog was so bad to, "Better stand back mister, I'm about to Slash... ALL MY PRICES!" So B grade lol.

I played though all of Battlefield Bad Company 1. I hated the demo, but actually really enjoyed the game. Glad I went back and played this before I pick up BC2 soon which I'll get with the Vietnam expansion. I liked the story and the characters, Haggard especially was very well done and pretty hilarious. I liked the going AWOL to steal Gold idea too. The gameplay was fun as well, and I enjoyed gun hunting and collecting as many weapons as I could.

Dragon Quest IX. It has all the greatness of 8 all compacted onto the DS. It even has local multiplayer, which works like Demon's Souls. Players that join keep treasure, loot, and EXP, while also being able to fully venture off from the host wherever they want.

Unfortunately, local multiplayer works well in places like Japan, but is difficult to work with here. There is greatness to be had if 10 works the same way on consoles. Kingdom Hearts on the DS would have been crazy good on a console fully online too.

Still, great title, even if I have to venture it with only one friend or by myself.

Continuing the summer tradition, I'm replaying Rival Schools and the pseudo sequel on PS1. Next up, R4 (Ridge Racer Type 4 that is)

I spent some time calibrating the TV for the PS1 via S-video and I've gotten as close as I can to replicating the CRT look. Sadly, the system can't support component and it's even sadder that S-video is being cut completely from most receivers (high end Onkyo excepted) and so far, every TV this year. It's only THE way of getting the best picture out of the 5th gen consoles so it looks as if we'll have to shell out the money for converters down the road.

There was apparently an official VGA adapter for the PS1 but it's extremely rare and goes for outrageous prices up to $100. I still wonder why no one but Sega thought of giving the option for an unfiltered VGA output last gen.

I've been playing a lot of Dreamcast as of late and while talking with a friend the conversation came to this. How in their right mind did any of the other three "successful" companies not think of this. Quite honestly, as far as holding up over time, the Dreamcast does it best due to this option. Shenmue over VGA is absolutely rediculous looking, it looks better than most of what is released now. However you have some decent looking PS2/GC games that honestly just don't hold up, when they could have. X-Box at least made use of 720p, so I can't say much there, but not on the majority of titles whereas VGA was included with almost every DC game.

Oh and btw kudos to R4, love that game.

The best direct comparison is SC on XBL and DC. It still looks better on the latter with a cleaner image quality; likewise while comparing S2. I think Sony's omission is the oddest one because they did offer RGB for PS1, and I'm guessing Sega liked the idea and went with it. They (Sony) have a habit of dropping good things design-wise; this gen's mistake being the exclusion of eDRAM which was a great move with the PS2. It cost them PS2 emulation which would've been a nice source of income on PSN.

The Xbox's limited 720p support still doesn't compare because it's still a converted output whereas the DC's VGA is a pure signal, so it'll hold up better. This gen with the PS3 and 360 will hold up well too.

I'll have to explore the quality of the converters sometime for the older consoles, but it won't be cheap for sure. Audio one are comparatively cheaper ($80 in 2004). I'd like to see SH3 sharp without the use of CRT's particularly that for a 6 year old PS2 game, it's still a beautiful game.

PS1 game image quality ironically continued to suffer so the original hardware via S-video and relying on a good TV scaler (XBR's are awesome in that regard) is better than upscaling on a PS3. That smoothing option is worthless since it's a blur filter.

Don't get me started on the audio. At least the PS2 via Toslink gave PS1 game a nice boost.

I used to use the DC via the VGA to a transcoder on an HD CRT before buying the XBR3, either way you swing it pure signal can't be beaten. It's a shame none of the other systems did the same. To me Sega always had the right ideas, they were perhaps just overly ambitious and not enough time went into market research.

Let me know which converters you find, I wouldn't mind trying out a few myself and reporting back. Could at least cut the research cost in half. I'd love to have one for the PSX and more or less the entire previous generation excluding DC.

Right now I'm playing Killzone 2 and Heavy Rain.
I've never been a great fan of FPS games (excluding Halo) but I'm very enjoing Killzone 2, what surprised me most is not the amazing graphics but rather the way the controls feel and the multiplayer, controls are weighty but realistic, and the competitive multiplayer is very tactic and challenging, for me Kz2 is definitely a breath of fresh air in the stale FPS market.
What about Heavy Rain? Well, I've only played 1 hour or so but the story seemed very interesting and emotional so far and I love the way the camera moves like it would in a movie...however the game has some weaknesses, for example its control scheme, while I like the resident evil-ish feel (given by tank controls alongside semi fixed camera) I don't like at all the clunky walking.

Just beat Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon. Gotta say im a sucker for a sad story and for interesting characters. Honestly the game play was terrible, in that the mechanics pretty well made me keep playing solely for the beautifully rendered environments, the wonderful and interesting characters, and for some of the most beautiful music i can recall. Its a wonderful japanese look at the post apocalypse, and the ending was one of the best i have seen.

Negative points i see are the outside environments were absolutely gorgeous, but often times they pushed the game into hallways and the underground, which worked beautifully in areas, and not as much in others. Weapons break too often, and basically you'll end up avoiding combat because the final boss requires only one long ranged weapon.. disappointing.

Overall though, ill take a game that invokes those wonderful stories and images, that makes you feel sympathy and such even with its terrible mechanics. At the highest the game is like 6.5-7 in terms of as a game only...but its way higher for me personally.

Now about 10 hours into Okami and gotta say cant believe i put this one off for so long, its absolutely one o the greatest games I have ever played. I love the light theme and funny characters, the gameplay mechanics are a delight and innovative, the light rpg elements dont detract from the action adventure, and it truly does feel like a breath of fresh air compared to recent zelda games  Pretty much loving okami and everything about it.
