I think Yama dislikes it because it slightly demeans the story. I think that (forbidden word) is very FPS-esqe. In games with a crappy story, but addictive multi-player, the single player gets renamed (forbidden word), while the multiplayer is considered the better portion of the game, eg the CoD series, while in games with great single, and multiplayer (Uncharted 2), it has a much more important role, and is referred to as story mode.
There is a stigma of sorts attached to the word (forbidden word), and I think that is what Yama is trying to avoid, keeping the FPS genre away from Resident Evil.

I always just assumed it was Story Mode. I believe that was always an original term for games- I'm not even sure where campaign became a lieu for story mode and then the multiplayer/online gameplay.
