I like Jake. I also liked Albert, but he was being dragged out and just all-out tanked in RE5. I wouldn't mind if he wasn't Albert's son, but that doesn't really matter to me. Even Wesker aside, I enjoy Jake's character. A huge part of it is that he's a new character that's not being overshadowed by a major pre-existing character (Sheva-Chris, Josh-Jill, Parker-Jill, Jessica-Chris). Granted, he does have Sherry tagging along with him, but Sherry wasn't a major player. You played as her for a whole 5-10 minutes in Claire's story and then she disappeared for so many years. Not to mention Jake seems to be the P1 character along with Leon and Chris. Sherry, Helena and Piers are the P2 characters.
