Slant Six should be ashamed of themselves. Perhaps they can switch careers, because it's clear that they have no future as video game developers.

Not that I disagree with you about Slant Six's ability to make a game (or lack thereof, as the case may be), if you really want to blame someone, you should blame Capcom for handing the reins over to them in the first place.

Slant Six has said repeatedly that, while they were pretty much allowed to do what they wanted with the title, Capcom Japan still had to okay everything first.

I blame them both, but you're right - Capcom is the problem here. They should have picked a developer who knows what they're doing, and they shouldn't give the green light on such terrible ideas. If Capcom actually cared about the series mythology at all, they wouldn't have done this. I miss the old Capcom.

What I would like to know is what other developers Capcom approached to make this game.

Well, that, and how bad those other developers' prototypes were that Capcom decided to go with Slant Six.

Well the thing with this is. Japan is obviously in a sad state regarding games right now. Many prominent developers have mentioned that the japanese just don't know what most gamers want and their tried and true traditions of japanese style gaming just doesn't sell as well outside of Japan.

They see all the shooter games that sell like hotcakes in the U.S. and Europe and figure that the western devs must know something they don't and thus they trust them even if it's not exactly what japan capcom would have done.

So Slant Six can make a game that capcom japan would never agree to make themselves for numerous reasons, yet approve it based on the idea that that kinda stuff seems to go over well with overseas audiences.

And the game is indeed made with multiplayer first and the story mode as an afterthought just to have one. And the multiplayer is indeed quite fun and enjoyable from a very basic level. So long as you don't mind a typical third person shooter formula with an RE skin and some monsters thrown in, you'll probably find it to be mindless fun.

And tons of casuals will enjoy it for that very reason. It's a mindless action shooter game they can jump into and play with ease and start killing people with and feeling good about themselves while being in a 'Resident Evil' world and feel like they're a part of something they always hear everyone talking about. They don't know any better.

So it is what it is. I bought this game to play Resident Evil online until Re6 drops, and that's what I am doing. It's not an amazing game by ANY means. But, I never expected it to be. I simply expected a mindless fun multiplayer RE game to tide me over until November and that's what I got. Story mode is absolute garbage but at least the multiplayer can be fun so that's all I care about right now.

I think its already been mentioned that the development time for the game was to be extremely short and so Slant Six were chosen because of their experience with squad-based shooters.

I know that's why they say Slant Six was chosen, but surely Capcom approached other developers who had experience with squad-based shooters. I mean, that's what ORC was supposed to be from the beginning.

Then again, Blue Castle and GRIN didn't exactly have experience making Dead Rising or Bionic Commando-style games, so maybe Capcom just approached whichever Western developers were cheap and available at the time. *shrugs*

Yeah but so far only Blue Castle got it right. They stayed true to the core of the concept of DR, added good things, fixed a few issues, and when it went well were rewarded by Capcom by being purchased and turned into Capcom Vancouver.

GRIN made a pile of average to bad games, Bionic included, which was probably a case of too much too fast then went out of biz. I can't see Slant Six getting great recognition on this (just basing it solely on technical issues), and unless Sony or someone else hands them another SOCOM game to butcher - I can't see the studio lasting based on all the comments.

I'd be interested to know though the breakdown of how much they were told to do from Japan and how much they were left to their own devices on. It's probably something we'll never know.

Frankly, I was kind of surprised Capcom didn't give ORC to Blue Castle. I suppose that could have been due to any number of reasons, though.

Ranging from lack of experience with squad-based games, they were too busy working on Off the Record, or are too busy working on Dead Rising 3.

"The idea [to work with a Western developer] came up when we were working on Lost Planet 2," he added. "We didn't have any other teams internally to work on it. Western studios are known for their ease of development, and in terms of gameplay, this genre.

"We just bought a studio in Vancouver (Blue Castle) and when we were looking for external partners, Blue Castle talked with Slant Six, and they were well known for their online games and their coding skills. We met them and they were big RE fans. A good starting point!"

Im thinking Capcom Japan didn't even take more time to approach other developers, they just went on a whim that Blue Castle knew what they were talking about. Slant Six well known? They don't even have much experience under their belt beyond a few spats of SOCOM. Capcom being naive about western developers? Perhaps so.
