(sort of in honor of the fact I'll soon be restarting the Onimusha series. Can't wait to play all the games at last)

This is pretty much the general way to sum up Dino Crisis and Onimusha. (although the description kinda falls apart for the latter since, from what I hear, it changes a lot after Warlords. I only ever played Warlords so...)

My question to you all is, how do yo compare the two franchises to our beloved Resident Evil/Biohazard? Do you think they're better than any RE game? Worse? In the middle somewhere?

For me, Dino Crisis 1 was somewhere down there with RE 3 and Code Veronica. Oh sure it had some nice scare moments and the premise was alright but the characters were painfully bland and the game was hampered by some really dumb gameplay decisions. (respawning enemies, re-using the same 2 or 3 puzzles over and over throughout the entire game, no real boss fights)

Warlords is...well, I love it. While the execution of the story comes off as silly, I quite like the story itself. There's no denying it's cheesy but that is made palatable by a very dark and grim atmosphere. Only RE1 and RE2 truly had interesting stories to me where I actually enjoyed reading the memos to learn more. Warlords is much the same way . A feather in its cap is also the fact I liked Samanosuke as a main character more than anyone in RE except Billy.

The gameplay was pretty fun as well, some nice hack-and-slash with cool Elemental Powers. Nothing too amazing but about as good as any RE game in my opinion.

Where I think Warlords towers above the competition is its music.

So those are my little thoughts. How about everyone else here?

Interesting Information
the late Noboru Sugimura (RIP) was one of the writers for Warlords. He also wrote, as I just found out, Resident Evil 2 which is my favorite RE game ever.
No coincidences there.

Dino Crisis always seemed very similar to CODE: Veronica as far as visual design, likely due to the moving camera and rendered backgrounds. I felt it was more or less a Biohazard title that had nothing to do with the series, it felt more true than some later entries ironically. Dino Crisis 2 was a departure and felt like it's own thing with a hint of Biohazard, while Dino Crisis 3 was just hilarious garbage. Onimusha was probably the more different out of the two, but still had hints of Survival Horror. Wouldn't say it was anywhere near as close as Dino Crisis, but still a sister series of sorts.

I still haven't beaten Dino Crisis for whatever reason. It just never hooked me the same way Biohazard did.

Onimusha, however, I've beaten the 4 main series games. Very addictive series with a plot as equally strange, but captivating as the Biohazard series. I really hope they make Onimusha 4 or 5 someday... would be tragic if they didn't.

You need to remedy this as soon as possible.

I think my love for Onimusha over RE is due to the simple fact I prefer fantasy to science fiction. We all know RE's grasp of science is tenuous at best but it still makes a pretense at realism for most of the games. That can really ruin my immersion when I try to think about the how of some things.

Onimusha is just straight up swords and magic and demons and I like that. (It's better than DMC in that regard too since DMC takes the whole thing and makes far too "anime")

Does anyone here who's played it have a favorite Onimusha game? Just want to know what I'm in fo since I'm gonna be trying to finish the series.

BH3 was fuck-awesome so that's a good place for Dino Crisis to be.

Also, enemies do not respawn, the game has more varied puzzles than most BH games, and the boss fights are all with T-Rex and all are awesome. The game is not about action to begin with, why would there be "real" boss fights where you wittle down an enemy's health?

Quote:
"More varied" is not a good thing when overused. I do not feel like playing Memory over and over and over and over again.

And are you saying RE1 and REmake are not about horror? I'm pretty sure they had boss fights too. So did Silent Hil and neither Resident Evil or Dino Crisis are in its legue when it comes to the horror element IMO.

Indeed, good thing none of the puzzles are over-used. The only ones which appear more than twice are the DDR door codes, and each one has a different formula to working them out, making them almost completely different puzzles. Your use of "overused" does not fit.

Didn't say anything about BH1 not having horror. However, I will say that DC1 is not a horror game. Not even "Survival Horror". It is "Survival Panic", a completely different genre, although similar in style. You're not meant to be able to defend yourself as well as you can in the BIOHAZARD series. Your enemies are bigger, stronger and deadlier than you or your weapons and this was completely intentional. You have less ammunition in DC1 than you do in a single BH game, and the handgun is worthless.

Your descriptions "Resident Evil w/ dinosaurs/samurais" are stupid to begin with. Both the Dino Crisis and Onimusha series are far removed from the BIOHAZARD formula, despite being derived from it.

Sugimura needs more attention too. BH2 was not his only credit. He was in charge of the series storyline between 1998 and 2003 in general. He also wrote GUN SURVIVOR, HEROES NEVER DIE, BH0, "Ada The Female Spy Lives" and the scrapped "Superhuman" and "Progenitor" versions of BH4, and supervised BIOHAZARD 4D-EXECUTER and BH3.

I'm pretty sure I did the memory puzzle at least three times. Don't ever want to play DC1 again though so I'll take your word for it.

And the DDK door puzzles...are you talking about putting in the passwords? That shouldn't even count as a puzzle.

L Key for L Door
Password is...Laboratory.

And all the doors are like that so you can figure out what the code is through simple reasoning.

As for "my description", it's not mine at all. It's the description people have used for both series for as long sS I've been a gamer. The tank controls and fixed camera angles are more synonymous with RE than anything else so it's easy to see why the comparisons were made.

The DDK door puzzle you just listed is literally the only one that can even be construed as obvious. The rest (Head, Newcomer, Waterway, etc) are not obvious by any means. That argument is shit, considering the puzzles in the BIOHAZARD aren't exactly the most tricky save for a few rare examples.

And making comparisons does not make them the same game, nor does it mean they have to strictly follow the same formula. Might as well say that BH1, being a clone of Sweet Home and Dr. Hauzer, should strictly adhere to those two games considered it's a direct rip-off of both.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said they followed the same formula. I made the topic to compare three franchises that are often compared and just to see what people here thought of the other two series.

Although, in retrospect, I should have just looked at the DC forum.

Still, hoping to get some more input on Onimusha.

Can I just say, the water puzzle in BH3 was excellent. It was challenging and I genuinely had fun solving it, felt rewarding.
