Chris' new appearance in RE5 has never really bothered me, like it seems to have bothered quite a few other people. I thought it was a very natural and necessary transformation considering his profession. (I don't know about you, but if I'm going to fight off hordes of infected creatures I want to be as strong as possible)

When I first saw his new look, I immediately thought that it was because of Jill's disappearance. My Chris/Jill shipper mind immediately took to the idea that because he wasn't strong enough to save her from death, he went into a sort of depressed downward spiral, and trained himself for nothing but revenge.

...then the Lost in Nightmares clip came up, and showed him with the same heavy build three years prior. Needless to say, that caused a lot of confusion for me.

Chris' file says a lot about his life after the events of Umbrella's End in UC. It states that he and Jill went on tons of missions together, basically traveled the world. Logically speaking, there's literally no way Chris could have had that much muscle gain with that kind of lifestyle. If any of you have ever tried bulking up, you know that it takes a rigorous routine and an extreme diet adjustment. All things that can't be accomplished while traveling the world destroying secret labs.

TL;DR version start here

"No one knows what kind of promises Chris made in front of Jill's empty grave, but following her loss, he redoubled his efforts to eradicate all bio-organic weapons..." - Chris' RE5 file

* Chris has ridiculously big muscles because he has been training hard for his eventual confrontation with Wesker. - RE5 beta notes

I still believe that it was after this moment that Chris started training for his fight with Wesker. I think that the developers were too lazy (or it simply would have cost too much time and money) to make a 'skinnier' REmake-esque model for Chris to have in the Lost in Nightmares section, and that his bulky appearance there is non-canon.

Any thoughts?

Maybe capcom is buying into what western society thinks a hero should be and look like?

As mentioned, he bulked up after his loss to Wesker in CV as he knew he'd eventually have to confront Wesker again and lacking Wesker's Superhuman abilities, the best he could do was increase his own strength.

As far as LiN goes, his outfit is pretty much very similiar to the STARS costume in that it hides his arms and any details on his chest. So while yes, the model is actually the same and has about the same frame and we all know this. You can't physically see his huge chest or his bulging biceps so they can 'semi' get away with it. You can also say he's been training since CV and thus would be bulkier by the time of LiN and after the failure and loss during LiN, he 'redoubled his efforts' as mentioned and worked himself to his RE5 stature.

Again, we all know the models are the same but, going from a story perspective, this seems the most logical. Especially if you as mentioned, let capcom away with the fact you can't see his biceps and chest in the LiN outfit so you can sorta play to the idea that he's not as bulked as RE5 'yet'.

There are four years from CV events (December 1998) to Umbrella's End (February 2003), and Chris is exactly the same from Remake. This makes me think that he doesn't start his fisical training at the time of CV.

In LiN (2006), he looks like if he had the same muscle from RE5, but I too think that this is non-canon. The lazy Capcom just don't changed his model.

So, I think that Chris started his intensive training after Jill's "death", and the result is showed in RE5.

Yup. I mean that's pretty much the only way. I can't picture Chris taking time away from his schedule when he was Jill's partner to weight train. Once Jill was out of the picture though, it makes total sense that he'd be able to focus on his strength.

It's kind of straight out of a fanfiction if you ask me  "I will train and avenge you Jill! "

I'm more inclined to say he started the intensive training after the search for Jill was called off.

Yeah, that was when she was pronounced dead and the grave was set up with no body, three months later. It makes sense that Chris would promise Jill's grave that he'd be stronger next time, so I'm making it my own little canon.

But wasn't he already that buff when she was alive like you said in the flashback?

Yeah but basically my thoughts are that his appearance in that flashback is non-canon. Meaning they just used the 2009 model instead of creating an entire new one for 2006.
