Today I tried out the demo for RE Degeneration on my sisters Iphone. It looks like a late 90's PC game, I guess ok for a cell phone game. Controls took a while to get used to, you need to use a virtual stick by pressing on the screen, kind of annoying.

So its definetly RE4 in style, same view point, same controls but soon I started to notice it's RE4 but with elements of the past games. I looked at my map and it wasnt a straight line on rooms, it looked like a classic RE games map, complete with locked rooms. The enemies are zombies and I assume classic T-virus monsters. As I searched around I found the classic crank which I used to open a gate in another room. It felt like old school RE but with the gunplay of RE4 (and it had money, a merchant, and such as well).

The game is probably not that great, good for a cell phone but probably nothing special outside of that. Still i was so pleased to see the two gameplay styles come together. This is what I want from a future game, I want RE4 gameplay with old RE style game progression.

RE 3.5 way=best way in my opinion.

Though I still think games that feature zombies would be too easy with even that style. One shot to the head=dead after all.

Still wish I had the means to try that game...

The only way to counter the easy zombie situation is to include tons of zombies on screen at once. Or make it more Outbreak like where you need to use melee weapons cause there are so few bullets. A RE4 style Outbreak game could be really awesome.

I prefer old style! *shakes his old man cane*

But I suppose it would work. Still, with a third person perspective I have the feeling it would be hard to keep track of where everyone is. It's only easy to do so in RE5 Versus because you have the on screen map, a true Outbreak game would have you stop moving to look at the map, and people would only show up on it while adlibbing.

I suppose they could change these things, but then that would take away from the realism I expect from the Outbreak series.

I think the RE4/classic hybrid we're looking for would have to be more than the new gameplay plus a bunch of zombies, but i do think Degeneration is a pretty strong effort, and definitely a step in the right direction.

I was always thought RE5 was going to be a great hybrid. I did afterall believe right until the end that it was going to feature zombies (thanks to the first teaser trailer) . But it looked like it was going to be heavy on atmosphere (delivered to an extent), exploration (lacking) and a decent enough story (lacking in so many ways bar that one memo at the end).

As i've always said, i think a hybrid would be very difficult to pull off. The early games were about closed in environments, very claustrophobic areas, and i'm not sure the new engine would be able to handle it all too well for a full game. I always said this whenever anyone anywhere would pipe up about how they wanted RE2 remade with the RE4 engine.

You know what. Like dvader said it is good for an cell phone game.. But you know what would have made it better?? Classic pre rendered backgrounds not only would it be easier to control but it would have better looks. Idk why but for some reason, some of the areas in the airport reminded me of Biohazard 1.5 just the way the shadows and blueish darkness was
