The Stand is probably one of the most outstanding books I have ever read, so naturally, when I heard of the TV-series I jumped it too. It has EVERYTHING; horror, drama, survival, elements of something supernatural, romance, action... I don't know how many people will actually want to discuss this, as I rarely come across people who have actually seen the mini-show, or even more rare; actually read the book. But I figure we can give it a try.

Has anyone experienced both, or just one? What are your impressions of the show and how well does it summarize the book? I realize this will be tricky to discuss as there might be some spoilers to those who, for instance, want to read the books so we'll have to be careful.

I'll start, but I'll be brief as I don't want to kill the thread right away by spilling everything. :P

The series was very good, and I understand that it CANNOT have what the book had simply because of lack of time, financial issues etcetera. Meaning that they ofcourse have to summarize the plot as well as they can (after all the version I have of the book is around 1300 pages). But still, I feel that the series left out characters, discussions and moments that while minor, were VERY important to the main characters and certainly explains a thing or two.

One example, among plenty others, is the exclusion of Rita with whom Larry travelled with from New York. In the TV series, it was made so that he met Nadine in NY instead which is a bit absurd because in the book she came from someplace else. And ontop of neglecting that detail, they also neglected a lot about Nadine's past, which is VERY significant to Nadine's... let's call it struggle.
Spoiler:
Rita, while an annoying and seemingly useless character, had a lot of impact on Larry especially after she OD'd on the pills. She triggered an immense guilt, ambivalence (with both needing her and hating her clingyness), and self-awareness in him, so she isn't just some random old hag who gets killed off for the fun of it.

Anyway, those examples are a couple of many more. So, while I love the show, it also left little plotholes here and there that I agree don't have to be filled. But in doing so (in the way the book did), it certainly makes the plot much richer, and the reader feels closer to the characters somehow.

It's been a long time since I read the book, I saw the mini series first BBC1 over 2 nights at 9PM I had to BEG my Mum and Dad to lat me stay up that late to watch it  God I am really that old.

I think back then it was a case of lets not scare the nice people out in T.V land too much or offend anyone. They really pushed it to the limit in some way's as in how the whole town was rounded up and the military losing the plot.Even though Ed Harris had such a small time wise part he got the General spot on slowly unraveling.

The casting was a marvel each member spot on with thire character Each one having a propper ending.

I find when you read a book the emotion comes in and you relate better.

Great topic Eoweniel Thank's.
