I have read articles and threads about censorship of Resident Evil games such as 1, 2, 3, code veronica, and 4. And we're here to talk about Censorship of all Resident Evil games!

Resident Evil (BIO HAZARD):

"Resident Evil" is known in Japan as "Bio Hazard". The Japanese version was released on March 22nd, 1996 in Japan with the colored uncut intro, Kenneth's head scene and uncut Bad Ending of Chris Redfield. Some version in Japan had a black and white intro in order to censor blood color, but still have uncut and horrifying scenes in the intro. The U.S. version was released on March 30th, 1996 in North America and the European version was released August 1st, 1996. Both U.S. and European version suffered censorship which had the intro heavily edited in black and white with grusome scenes cut out, Kenneth's scene was cut out, and Chris' bad ending was short and edited to prevent smoking as it did with the edited intro. The Saturn version was relesed in Japan on July 25th, 1997 without censorship. The U.S. version was released in North America on August 31st, 1997. Amazingly, some First-print U.S. Saturn versions contained the uncut colored intro (which may included the uncut Kenneth's scene and unedited bad ending of Chris). "Bio Hazard Director's Cut" was released in Japan on September 25th, 1997 and the Dual Shock was released in Japan on August 6th, 1998 with no censorship. "Resident Evil Director's Cut" was released in U.S. on September 30th, 1997 and was supposed to include uncut scenes the Capcom promised to the fans, but sadly due to copyright of the intro, the U.S. version is still censored. The U.S. Dual Shock version that was released in North America on September 14th, 1998 suffered the same censorship. The Japanese PowerVR PC version was released in Japan on December 6th, 1996 and has the colored intro uncut with other uncut scenes. The U.S. PC version is also the complete uncut and uncensored version and was released in North America on September 30th, 1997. Some European PC versions of RE1 were censored but not the German version and the U.K. PowerVR PC edition. The edited Nintendo DS version named "Resident Evil Deadly Silence" was released in Japan and U.S. with the censored black-and white intro and the edited Chris' bad ending.

Resident Evil 2 (BIOHAZARD 2):

Resident Evil 2 was the first to be released in U.S. on January 21st, 1998 and featured grusome death scenes involving Leon or Claire being eaten and violently getting beaten to death. The death scenes were censored for the Japanese version titled Biohazard 2, which is released secondly in Japan on January 29th, 1998. The Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 and PS1 Dual Shock versions versions in Japan were censored while the U.S. versions are uncensored. The Gamecube version and the PC version in Japan contains the same uncut content as the U.S. versions which includes death scenes.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (Biohazard 3: Last Escape)

The German version has all blood gray, censored, and bodies of enemies disappear like in the old arcade games. European versions like UK English, Italian, French, and Spanish, have red blood and gore, except zombie's head stays attached when you kick a it's head as Jill or encountering Hunter in the hospital as Carlos. In the U.S. for Playstation, PC, and Dreamcast versions, you kick the zombie's head and it's head stays attached, but the Gamecube versions (and some PS1 versions with Dino Crisis demo) in the U.S. you CAN decapitate zombies by kicking them or see it's head get decapitated by a Hunter. Completely uncensored. The Original Japanese version is almost uncensored for all consoles except for the fact that after the Hunter decapitates you, the "You Died" sequence doesn't show the headless body lying down. Also after you download the Japanese PS1 version from the Japanese PS3 store, it's completely censored!

Resident Evil Code: Veronica (Biohazard Code: Veronica)

People complained about the gories Resident Evil games in Japan so they decided to put new censorship rules for Japan. There were no decapitations allowed on either U.S., Japan, or European versions. It was until the Gamecube Remake of Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

The U.S version on Gamecube, PS2, PC, Wii, and downloads on Xbox 360 and PS3 featured uncensored content such as enemy decapitations and gory uncensored death scenes like Leon getting decapitated by a Chainsaw man, and unexpected Ashley's jiggling boobs. All console versions in Japan were censored because of CERO rating laws.

There you have it! What do you guys think?

Don't forget guncon support was dropped for RE:Gun survivor because of the colombine shootings. the japanese version is the only version to retain guncon support.

This Colombine shootings is what destroyed Resident Evil 3 and Gun Suvivor series! The censorship should not have happend if the shootings haven't occured!! This is what pissed me off! This is bullshit!

Actually re3's censorship was capcom trying to avoid getting in trouble with video game violence. i think the game came out before there was a proper rating system in japan. once cero rolled around they eased up a bit.

It's a shame that gory deaths just ain't happening anymore. The ones in RE5 were brutal but not gory. I'm not expecting RE6 to have gory deaths unless of course it's a BOW death.

You have a shitty attitude.

Personally I think that the IP's or the industry itself shouldn't have to take blame or a hit for something that two ignorant dbag's decided to do of their own free will. Last time I looked there was no video game that went anywhere near suggesting anything like that anywhere in it's story. So I find it hard to believe that any entity, group of people or anyone for that matter could tell the video game public at large that a game was the reason this happened. Just plain foolish.

This is like the fourth topic about this stuff he's made and he's gotten extremely over emotional about the lack of decaps in each one of them to the point of yelling at and insulting other users over it.

There's no bad attitude about it. He just honestly takes the censorship thing way too seriously. Almost personal.

That's all my comment does is point out he just needs to relax and not take it so seriously.

Very nice post....
it's really complicated with the Biohazard games and censorship....I think except for Biohazard 5 every game since Bio2 was censored in Japan...the wii lightgun games didn't have gory headshots.... and my copy of Biohazard Outbreak File#2 also had no exploding heads( but I'm not sure if it's censored as I've never played the US Version)...

Does anybody know about the wii version from the Biohazard Remake? I want to import that game and haven't read anything about censorship, but I'm not sure if that's only because nobody played the Japanese version :rcg:
