Very similar architecture which is a good thing as we won't have to deal with inferior ports and such. That was a big reason I bought 360 counterparts of a lot of titles, along with better net play.

Quote:
Note that unlike the Xbox 360 vs. PS3 era, Sony's hardware advantage here won't need any clever developer work to extract - the architectures are near identical, Sony just has more resources available to use.

Those problems seem to be a thing of the past. While similar architecture just about ensures near identical multiplatform releases, the extra meat under the hood also suggests that developers can easily push PS4 versions further with ease. The PS4 continues to look better and better.

I can only hope that Sony's relationships with developer and publisher alike is becoming strong again. Even though probably not as it used to be in the ps2 days. Now that the PS4 is easier to program for and basically the same as Xbox One (horrible name), developers can make their games with both systems in mind instead of one over the other, without resulting in inferior ports.

Microsoft has also been quoted saying their goal was not to reach the best graphical fidelity as possible and it is clearly obvious now. With a weaker system, and an OS that takes up almost a 3rd of the systems ram, its hard for me to see how a company could choose one over the other. Unless of course publishers/developers are all lobbying for MS's new restriction plan on physical games.

My only fear is that developers will create games with the weaker system in mind and lower the possible potential of their games. This is basically the reason why a lot of PC games don't look as good as they possibly could (developers wanting to make all versions of the game as close to each other as possible). But that's a whole other problem that I don't want to dive into in a conversation that's meant to be focused towards consoles.

Nice to see Sony learning from it's past mistakes. Looks like they're in it to win it with the PS4, easily the more attractive of the 2 next gen options. Can't wait to see more at E3. Fingers crossed they deliver, and next gen isn't a complete bust.

Microsoft have got complacent with their position in the gaming market, best explanation for it. In the XBone they've essentially taken the Resident Evil 6 approach - attempting to nail multiple targets but being wide of the target on all in the eyes of the mass market.

For the current generation, I dived on the X-Box 360 about a week or two after launch. Without a HD TV, and only Condemned to keep me going it was a mistake. I was happy to wait it out until long after the PS3 launch as well to get one of them. I won't jump in so early this time, but I don't currently see it in my near future that I'd have an Xbone under my TV.

The DF did their own too, with some insights as to why things ended up the way they are:

If PS2 and Wii are anything to go by it's that hardware isn't everything when it comes to successful game consoles. I still stand by the notion that the games and user friendly base will ultimately speak for themselves more than any of their features or additions.

Online DRM and killing a viable used game market is anything but user friendly. Features do matter, and well, in the case of the Wii, the wiimote was its selling point. MS has a lot of PR damage to patch in the months leading to launch, and they have the money to do so. Hopefully they won't resort to calling people backwards for wanting used games, like Mattick did when asked about backwards compatibility.

On a side note, the PS2 wasn't positioned like the Wii, nor did it launch alongside or after more capable hardware. People seem to forget that it launched 19 months before the GC (JPN launches) and 21 months before the Xbox. The competition had the technical edge for launching much later.

Ps4 might catch my interest later on post launch. But the new Xbox is going to be a colossal failure. Microsoft just shot themselves in the neck with a shotgun with this. All the comments I've seen are 99% negative. And no one i know plans on buying one either. Microsoft is doomed
