--- Original Post ---

Finally received DQVIII and the FFXII demo. It's excellent!

To those who have played the demo, what did everyone think of the battle modes? The whole engine is well done, quite the departure though. It didn't take me half as long to get used to as I thought it would. After playing both modes three times now, I'll likely go with wait mode. Active was a bit faster than previous titles and didn't give much time to plan. Perhaps once used to the game and knowing of the combos at hand it's be more usable. How about yourselves? I could see the active mode being appealing to those who disliked the turn based, not to mention the game is faster overall. I can see the series actually gaining a new fanbase, much like Biohazard 4 did for the Biohazard series.

As for the menu, where is it? Hopefully it's just the demo. While most things are doable in game, I like having status screens, etc.

Lastly, just a quick tech question. Is anyone able to confirm 16:9 support for the game, or even progressive scan? It's been in the works awhile now, so it wouldn't be suprising not to see it. However being 2006 and all it'd hurt. Anyhow, some questioned the new mode of battle and exploration, I can see now however the departure is not in complete vein. The game looks and plays great and as always, the FMV's are out of this world.

Ya ive never been a big fan of Final Fantasy. I liked 7, beat it and 9 is good too. Ive never been excited for a FF before but this one has got me. With its Skies of Arcadia similarity's and beutiful graphics. The story is what im most interested in. The gameplay I dont mind either as its almost just like Knights of the Old Republic, one of my favorite RPG's.

Why is that? You dislike the others ones, or simply never played them for some reason? If you liked those two games, I'm sure you'd like the entire series, as those two games give you a little bit of old and new style.

As for the story, well yeah... that's every mainstream FF's strong point, pretty much any JRPG. With the story as a given however, I'm very interested in the new engine... which is what the demo showed off, in fact they gave no story away in the demo. I think FFVII's battle system was near perfect, but this one may just top it as far as fluidity and fun... we'll see, so far it's amazing and I only imagine it getting better.

The one thing I really want to see is the menu and exploration, non-battle areas: ie - towns, cities, etc. From the videos, that looks amazing. The scale of Ivalice is incredible, it looks like it'll improve from what was near perfect in many of the other games in the series... bigger areas and worlds, better battle system and a better exploration method. I do want to see the vehichles, I wonder if there is a world map. Imagine vehichles were useable like the other games, but without a small scaled world map - insetad in a real scaled area, that'd be incredible!

Damn I really want to play that FFXII demo (I almost got DQVIII but I figured its bound to drop in price soon, plus I am not the biggest RPG fan, mostly just FF).

I did hear that in the battle you do have the option to turn on a wait function so that when its your turn the fight will pause and you can choose your attack in peace. I also like taking my time picking my attack but the way the game is designed might make me choose the other way. I think its a great change, real time fights are the way to go.

FFX was pretty good, great graphics. I just never liked the story. 8 was alright too but again, the story. I have 5 and 6 too but just havent got around to them.

Yeah, I agree... with 8. It had a cool art style, beautiful graphics for the time but the story was just horid. There were parts that caught me, but compared to some of the others it was just meh. It can be summed up in one line: "Final Fantasy VIII, the only RPG where you... fight dinosaurs in school cafeterias while making love in space to bootleg J-Pop." Am I not right? :P

OT - I'm totally into DQVIII, this game owns. I just started yesterday, but I've been sick so I've done little else but play it. Where are you at? I've just got Angelo on my team.

Im about 10 hours in at Lv.13 for Hero and Yangus. Just got Jessica at Lv. 10.
What weapon point skills are you allocating to?
Ive got Hero with Sword/boomerang/Courage
Yangus with Axe/Scythe/Humanity
Jessica with Whip/Knife/Sex Appeal

Should I use Staff with Jessica or Angelo when I get him? I know ill be using Bow atleast when I get Angelo.

Enix: LV15

Swords: 10
Spears: 12
Boomerangs: 0
Fisitcuffs: 0
Courage: 16

(I plan on doing mostly swords, but I have a strong spear right now.)

Yangus: LV15

Axes: 11
Clubs: 10
Scythes: 20
Fisticuffs: 2
Humanity: 25

Jessica: LV13

Knives: 0
Whips: 13
Staves: 0
Fisticuffs: 0
Sex Appeal: 20

Angelo: LV12

Just got him, all zeros. It's annoying that they don't match up the levels of newly aquired characters, it's almost too old school at times... not a big bother though.

I plan to add knives to Jessica, but wanted her whip to be somewhat helpfull for now. Same with Enix, when I'm able to buy a new boomerang I'll up that. I want to have it pretty even though, not just a primary and secondary... each weapon has it's uses.

even if you dont really like FF, i really suggest taht you play FF 4 and 6 (2 and 3 in the US on SNES). those are the two best i think. IMO they are better than 7. they both had amazing stories and were very fun. plus 6 had some of the coolest characters ever.

I don't think I have the time or patience for RPGs anymore. I used to love running around towns talking to all the villagers, checking every knook and cranny etc. Now all I want to do is get to the end of the game....they're just so time consuming it literally depresses me knowing I'm spending that much time playing a game, regardless of how much I'm loving the story. Sad but True
