Figured since I spent a while complaining about Eileen in my other thread, I owed it to myself to come here and praise a game I love.

The Room used to be called the worst SH game. Then Homecoming came out.

I didn't need a terrible new game to make me see that SH4 was great though. I liked Silent Hill 4 ever since I first played it.

The gameplay was, as to be expected from an SH game, awful. However the storyline was more than enough to make me go on. It was fascinating that the antagonist (Walter) was the real main character and Henry was just sort of along for the ride to give us all insight into Walter's past and his motivation.

Here's one of my favorite scenes. It is a great representation of both how rather sad and yet creepy Walter is.

In addition to that great story, it had some beautiful music.

Most everyone knows Room of Angel but there was also Nightmarish Waltz, Cradle of Forest which played over the credits, and my favorite vocal track from the game, Tender Sugar.

So yeah, what did the people here think of the game?

I really enjoyed this game through and through. I think it is underrated by the gaming community and Silent Hill fanbase alike.

The game is brilliant and I believe it far surpasses Silent Hill 1. Though not quite as good as 2 or 3. It also had one of the creepiest unnerving and truly scary creature designs ever.

Spoiler:

Those things just scream unnatural abomination at you, and they chilled me to the bone when I first encountered one, actually had to run Henry to a nearby room and just take a breath for a few seconds. Whoever came up with the visual design for that thing is a genius and is seriously F'ed up.

I also admire how well the room (or apartment) is set up. Some people hate on this game when they find out parts are in first person but I actually think that made the game. Henry's apartment, the whole atmosphere within it is brilliant and so well pulled off. It truly feels like a character itself, and seeing it through Henry's eyes pulls you into the world and peek out through windows and get a reflective insight into Henry himself through his actions and thoughts. The evolution of his room over time throughout the game is very well done as well, I always liked to explore through it and see what changed since I last visited it.

And as stated previously, Eileen was awesome.

This is my favorite Silent Hill game, believe it or not.

Those two-headed creatures are called Twin-Victims, if memory serves. Scary stuff. Maybe I should buy this game... Will it work on a PS3?

..if your PS3 has backwards capability (if it is a "Fat" ps3) then yes, you can. Otherwise, if you have the slim ps3, then it can't play Playstation 2 games.

I'm one of the few who loved SH4 from the getgo and never hated on it. It's one of my fav in the series, and I adore Henry. He reminds me quite a lot of myself in both personality, occupation, dress style, and looks as well. So I was definately able to relate to him even if he didn't get as much development as other chars in the series.

Also, Room of Angel is one of my fav songs in the series.

I always wanted to enjoy this more than I did. It's mostly the ghosts that annoy me. The story in it is actually one of the most complete and thoroughly thought about in the entire series, but again that goes against the grain of the series beforehand (where a lot of the plot was vague and relied on you to put it together). It's definitely not anywhere near as bad as Homecoming in retrospect either.

I'd also love to see Konami HD remaster the PS2 era titles for the PS3... because the entire PS2 set of 2, 3, and 4 would look AMAZING in HD. I'd definitely pick it up and replay all of them again.

Just get the PC versions :p

I've yet to complete this, and I've actually got the first print of the JPN version with the bonus mini CD. I remember stopping at the prison with a wounded Eileen, where the backtracking just killed it for me.

It wasn't a bad game, it just needed to be a standalone title without the SH name. Sadly, because of its attachment to the SH series, it kind of doomed the series into development hell in the west. It didn't sell well at all despite being on 3 platforms at release.

After playing the polished and what I consider perfect Silent Hill 3, I was expecting more of the same from The Room. A few seconds in I noticed it lacked obvious polish, but I can easily look past that. However an hour and change in it felt completely different than the rest of the series and I was put off by it, it seemed inferior. I even remember trying to restart it a second time to just end up turning it off early once more.

Fast fwd. to 2009 where everything since The Room has been below average at best, Detrimantix kept recommending it to me. Figuring we have similar taste I gave it another go and actually enjoyed it. It picked up rather late, but considering what came out after it, the difference from the original three actually felt like a breath of fresh air. I definitely found new layers of respect for the game. It still has it's share of issues and I wouldn't put it above the originals, but it at least felt like a Team Silent game compared to what's out now.
