Annette is an Umbrella scientist, wife of brilliant William Birkin and mother to Sherry. Annette had always been hard working, almost forgetting her duties as a parent, so obsessed was she with her husband's work on the G-Virus. In September of 1998, Umbrella operatives broke into Birkin's lab, shot William and stole the G-virus sample. William then injected himself with the virus, turning him into monster.

Annette panicked, called Sherry and told her to get to the police station. Meanwhile, all of Raccoon City was hit with an outbreak of the virus. Annette knew that Umbrella was still after the G-Virus sample so she hid it inside the pendant given to her daughter. She was obsessed with finding Sherry to get to the sample before someone else would.

Annette confronted Ada whom she knew was a spy looking for the sample, shooting at her only to hit Leon instead. She ran off to continue her search, eventually finding a sample of the virus. As Annette was planning her escape with the sample, a tremor hit the underground Umbrella lab causing a pipe to fall on her head, knocking her unconscious. She regained consciousness only long enough to stumble into Ada, who was holding Leon at gunpoint, and shoot her in the back; she died soon after when the lab exploded.
