Alfred is the heir to the Ashford family legacy, a family that co-founded Umbrella. Alfred and his twin Alexia were both young, promising scientists, but it was Alexia who showed the most promise and became the love of the family. Alfred took a secondary role to his sister, whom he loved to the point of insanity.

Alexia was trying to develop a new virus called the T-Veronica virus. Alfred and Alexia were so ruthless that they experimented on their own father after they found out they were conceived from one of his experiments. Alexia wanted to perfect the T-Veronica virus, so she injected herself with the virus and froze herself for many years. Alfred was to keep it a secret and make it seem his sister was dead.

Umbrella was angry at the news of Alexia’s death so they stationed Alfred at Rockfort Island, a prison center. During the time without his sister Alfred went totally insane over the loss of his sister. He created another personality in the image of his sister; he would dress up like her and carry out full conversations with himself.

A few months after the Raccoon City outbreak, Rockfort Island was attacked by a rival corporation, which let out an outbreak. For whatever reason, Alfred decided to place all the blame for the attack on Claire Redfield. Alfred tried many times to kill Claire, once attempting to shoot her, but he missed wildly due to poor aim (even with a laser sight). He also set traps for Claire, which Claire would pass with ease and, at every turn, attempted to kill her with his annoying voice, which did not work either.

Alfred abandoned Rockfort Island and flew to the base in the Antarctic that held his sister. Claire and Steve followed Alfred to the base, where Alfred tried to kill Claire once more, but this time Steve shot Alfred and he fell deep into the base. With his last gasp of life he crawled toward the capsule that held his sister, and watched with joy as she was finally revived. Fittingly, his last word was “Alexia”.
